An epidural steroid injection is a block that is commonly used to reduce pain and inflammation.  This treatment can be very effective as it contains anti-inflammatory medicine and delivers pain relief directly to the source of the problem.

Epidural steroid injection is used to decrease the inflammation that is associated with a variety of spinal conditions (just to name a few) including:

  • Spinal stenosis
  • Herniated disc
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Buldging disc

Other reasons to consider an epidural injection:

Before an epidural steroid injection

An epidural steroid injection approximately takes 30 minutes.  The patient lies flat on an x-ray table on their abdomen.  Prior to the injection, lidocaine (a "local" anesthetic similar to Novocain that the dentist uses) is used on the area to numb the skin.

What to expect during an epidural injection

  • Using fluoroscopy (live x-ray) for guidance, the physician injects steroids into the epidural space
  • The procedure is typically not uncomfortable
  • The procedure usually lasts 30 minutes with a 45 minute recovery period
  •  Normal activities can typically be resumed the next day

Success rates

Over 50% of our patients find pain relief when receiving an epidural steroid injection.  If a patients does not experience any back or leg pain relief from the injection, a second injection is usually not administered.  However, if there is improvement, an additional one or two injections may be recommended.

Patients suffering from excruciating knee pain benefit greatly from Epidural Streroid Injections.
